Successful People Are Good Listeners: Be a Good Listener

Be A Good Listener

One very key attribute one must possess is the ability to listen, not just to listen, but to be a good listener. Once again, lets take a hint from the holy scriptures on the subject matter.

James 1:19-20 says,

19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. (NIV).

If you can hear and you can read, congratulations! Everything that a person is or will ever become is a function of the combination of all what the person had seen and heard. So, how are you hearing? You must be prepared to listen more than you talk.

Be a better listener because there is nothing more appealing than having someone listens to you intently. Yes intently! For to be a good listener entails paying attention to whatever you are listening to. That way you won't easily forget it.

There are people who go to school, especially higher institutions and what determines their success and failure in examinations is how good they listen and/or neglect to listen to their lecturers. At that level, students take full responsibilities for note writing. If they listen well, they will get what the lecturers are putting across to them perfectly but if not, the reverse will be the case.

In the same vein, what will determine the fate of many on the last day is how well they listen or refused to listen.

In church, are you one of those who wander away while the worship or bible study is going on? Some folks describe such attitude as the "Spirit of buying and selling". In Ecclesiastes 5:1, the Bible says "Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong."

Therefore, if you want to go far in life, be a successful person in any field of human endeavour, be a good listener. In spiritual matters, in business, in education and so on, be a good listener.

The book of Proverbs 23:12 says, "Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge."

To be a good listener, you have got to humble yourself. Listen to the word of God, to the church preacher, listen to good advices, listen to your friends, listen to the environment, listen to successful persons, listen to the news, listen for stocks, listen to business ideas, even to commercial ads, listen to your parents and elders, listen to others mistakes, listen even to the poor, etc. And success will be at the tip of your fingers.

Take a look at the bible passages below:

Proverb 18:12 Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but humility comes before honour. 13 He who answers before listening--that is his folly and his shame. 15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.

Your prayer to God in this regard should go like this:

Heavenly Lord, thank you for giving us human senses to appreciate our environment. Help us to use our sense of hearing more to your glory in Jesus name; Amen.
